What is a table runner?

A table runner is a decorative strip of fabric placed along the center of a table. It can be used on its own for a more contemporary look or layered over a tablecloth to structure the setting and create contrast.

A cotton table runner is also a highly versatile decorative accessory. It works just as well for everyday dining as it does for a birthday, wedding, baptism or holiday celebration. Easy to arrange, it refreshes the atmosphere of the table without requiring a complete change of décor.

A table runner gives you genuine freedom to compose your setting. Natural colors create a quiet, understated look, while decorative patterns and richer shades such as red or pink make a stronger statement. Classic, contemporary or graphic designs can be adapted to many different table styles.

How to choose a table runner?

The right table runner depends on how you plan to use it, the size of your table and the atmosphere you want to create.

The occasion is a useful starting point. For everyday dining, choose a design that coordinates easily with your dinnerware and interior. For a wedding, birthday or baptism, the table runner becomes an important part of the decoration and highlights the care given to every detail.

The style and theme of your table can then guide your choice. For an elegant, timeless setting, choose light or natural shades such as white, beige and soft neutrals. For a warmer or more festive effect, deeper colors such as red or pink bring character to the table. A Christmas table runner can also be coordinated with candles, glassware and seasonal foliage.

For a country-inspired setting, favor floral or botanical motifs with natural materials and simple dinnerware. For a more modern table, graphic patterns and contrasting colors create a structured, contemporary look.

The dimensions are equally important. The ideal length depends on the shape and size of the table and on the effect you want to achieve. A long table runner creates a stronger visual presence, while a shorter format remains lighter and more discreet.

How to style and position a table runner?

A table runner can be used on rectangular, round or square tables, either on its own or layered over a tablecloth.

Placed lengthwise along the center of the table, it follows the table's natural lines and creates a classic, balanced setting. As a general guide, allow approximately 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 in) of fabric to hang over each end.

For a different arrangement, position table runners across the width of the table, facing each place setting. On a round or square table, two runners can also be crossed to create a more original, structured composition.

Your table runner can also be used elsewhere in the home. Placed on a coffee table, sideboard or kitchen counter, it becomes a decorative textile in its own right.
